Jan 31 - Franz Peter Schubert born at 1:30PM at the 'House of the Red Crab (or Crayfish)', No. 72 Himmelpfortgrund in Vienna. His father was Franz Theodor Florian, a schoolmaster. His mother was Elisabet Katherina Vietz. He had four siblings who lived beyond infancy: Ignaz (1785-1844), Ferdinand (1794-1859), Karl (1795), and Maria Theresa (1801).

Schubert family moves to Saulengasse.
1797-1808
Sings in choir at Liechtental Church; learns violin from father; studies singing, keyboard, and counterpoint under Michael Holzen.

1813-1816 The Schoolhouse Years
Continues contacts with friends at the Konvikt. Continues to go to Salieri for lessons. Nearly half of the works in the Deutsch catalog were written in these three years. Includes Five symphonies, four Masses, six operas, four string quartets, and 270 songs.

August - Qualifies as a teacher; goes to work in father's school. Teaches primary grades; teaches the youngest children in their letters. Earns 80 florins a year.
Sept 13 - Completes String quartet in B flat major (D112).
Oct 16 - Mass No. 1 in F (D105) performed at Liechtental Church; soprano role sung by Therese Grob, with whom Schubert falls in love.
October 19 - Gretchen an Spinnrade (D118), his first masterpiece.

Jan - Schubert family moves to Rossau suburb. Schubert remains there as teacher until July. Erlafsee is published - Schubert's first published work.
Feb - Symphony No. 6 in C major (D589).
March 1 - Overture in the Italian Style (D590) played in public concert at the Theater an der Wien. First orchestral work of Schubert to be played in public.
July - Schubert resigns from teaching. Becomes music tutor to Esterhazy family at Zseliz in Hungary. Makes about 76 florins a month; to his friends, an enviable salary. Begins light-hearted love affair with the countess's chambermaid, Pepi Pockelhofer. They remain friends for years. Writes a series of piano duets, used to teach the young countesses (D733, D599, D624)
Nov 19 - Back in Vienna; shares lodgings with Mayrhofer in Wipplingerstrasse.

Schubert's fortunes take a turn for the better. By the end of this year, 20 songs are published in seven opus numbers.

Feb - Moves into house near Mayrhofer in Wipplingerstrasse.
March - Entusiastic reception by public of Erlkonig.
April 5 - Publication of Erlkonig Op. 1 is announced.
Summer - Holidays in Atzenbrugg with Schober.

Sept-Oct - Schubert and Schober go to St Polten at stay at the castle of Ochsenburg to work on Alfonso und Estrella (D732).

Sept 1 - On doctor's advice, moves to Neue Weiden suburb to stay with brother Ferdinand.
